● Both sides jointly promote circular economy and climate neutrality

Material manufacturer Covestro and SOL Kohlens?ure have reached a framework agreement for a supply partnership for biogenic carbon dioxide (CO?).
With immediate effect, as one of Europe’s foremost gas and gas service providers, SOL
Kohlens?ure will supply liquid CO? to Covestro’s plant in NRW, Germany, for the production of plastics such as MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) and polycarbonate. Under the terms of the framework agreement, SOL
Kohlens?ure will supply up to 1,000 tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide this year. From 2023, the supply will increase substantially further, enabling Covestro’s NRW plant to save the same amount of carbon dioxide from fossil sources.

Daniel, Head of Covestro’s NRW Plant
Koch explains: “We have set ourselves the goal of being fully circular. To do this, we want to convert our basic raw material sources into 100% renewable resources. We are delighted to have found SOL
A partner like Kohlens?ure will support our transformation with a pioneering spirit. ”

Falko Probst, Sales Manager at SOL Kohlens?ure, said: “We at SOL
Kohlens?ure is advancing the transition to a more sustainable source of carbon dioxide. In this way, we increase security of supply and are no longer dependent on fossil raw materials, while reducing our impact on the environment. ”

From scrap to raw materials

SOL
The CO2 produced by Kohlens?ure comes from a variety of different sources, such as bioethanol and biogas plants. In these plants, carbon dioxide is a by-product of the processing of various biomasses, such as plant residues. SOL
Kohlens?ure separates, purifies carbon dioxide and uses it as a raw material in Covestro’s production.

In this way, supply partnerships support the circular concept and help reduce emissions.

Covestro’s Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen plants on the Lower Rhine are ISCC PLUS certified to offer customers more sustainable products made from renewable raw materials .

Goal of climate neutrality by 2035by2035

Covestro has set itself the goal of being completely circular. This also includes the use of alternative raw materials. Biomass, carbon dioxide, and end-of-life materials and waste replace fossil raw materials such as crude oil or natural gas. Carbon is managed in a circular fashion. To achieve these goals, both companies rely on long-term supply partnerships.

In addition to biogenic carbon dioxide, Covestro is investigating the use of other renewable energy technology gases. The material manufacturer has already delivered the first sustainable products, such as climate-neutral MDI, to its customers. The portfolio will grow further in the coming years as the base of alternative raw materials expands.

ISCC (“International Sustainability and Carbon Certification”) is an internationally recognized certification system for sustainability such as biomass and bioenergy. The standard applies to all stages of the value chain and is recognized globally. ISCC
Plus also includes other certification options, such as biomass plastics in technical and chemical applications.
