The industrial application of the new generation of sugar-based 1,3-propanediol production technology marks a major breakthrough in engineering technology for the large-scale production of bio-based 1,3-propanediol.

The construction site of this project is located in Changzhi City, Shanxi Province. After the first phase is put into operation, it will form a high-quality bio-based 1,3-propanediol production capacity of 20,000 tons/year, providing stable and reliable production capacity for polyester, polyurethane, cosmetics, degradable plastics and other industries. 1,3-Propanediol (“PDO” for short) is an important chemical raw material, widely used in polyester, polyurethane, cosmetics, degradable plastics, pharmaceutical intermediates, inks, printing and dyeing, lubricants and other fields. The most important use of PDO is to polymerize with terephthalic acid (PTA) to produce polytrimethylene terephthalate (“PTT” for short). PTT is a new type of high-performance bio-based polyester fiber, which has the stability of PET, the softness of nylon, the bulkiness of acrylic, the stain resistance of polyester and the elastic recovery ability close to spandex, and has excellent shape retention characteristics. Also known as “memory fiber”, known as “the king of polyester”.

From the 1990s to the present, Energy China and the technical team of Professor Liu Dehua of Tsinghua University have continued to research and develop the production process of 1,3-propanediol by fermentation, and realize engineering application. The successful research and development of this sugar process route has increased the diversity of raw materials, and completely solved the unfavorable factors caused by the large fluctuation of the price of the original single raw material (glycerol) on the production of 1,3-propanediol. In addition, compared with the glycerol route, the sugar process route has lower energy consumption for fermentation, fewer by-products, further simplification of the separation and purification process, and a significant reduction in the production cost of 1,3-propanediol. The implementation of this project and the R&D and application of new technologies indicate that China Energy Construction will continue to lead in 1,3-propanediol engineering technology, and become the only 1,3-propanediol technology at home and abroad that has mastered the “glycerol + sugar multi-raw PDO fermentation technology” support unit.
